New York Drug And Alcohol Detox Programs

Many people begin their journey in sobriety with a detox program. Detoxing, or withdrawing, from drugs and alcohol is an uncomfortable and sometimes painful or even dangerous situation, so seeking professional help is often the most appropriate and safest choice. A detox program provides a comfortable and safe place for individuals to withdraw from substances and also provides any necessary medication management or assistance to help with symptoms.

The Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai offers detoxification programs as part of its comprehensive drug and alcohol addiction services. The state-of-the-art facilities are comfortable and offer a safe environment for patients to effectively withdraw from substances. This rehab center also provides medication assistance when needed to treat withdrawal symptoms.

New York Inpatient Drug And Alcohol Rehab Programs

Inpatient drug and alcohol rehab programs are an intensive form of addiction treatment that requires individuals to reside at the treatment facility for several weeks or months. This type of treatment is recommended for those with a more severe substance use disorder or who have an unstable or enabling home life.

Inpatient rehab centers offer treatment programs that typically center around a certain approach, such as a 12-step program. Other forms of therapy are often incorporated to provide a comprehensive recovery program.

Treatment methods that may be offered at a New York inpatient drug and alcohol rehab center include:

  • cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • group therapy
  • family counseling
  • nutritional education
  • fitness programs
  • yoga or meditation
  • animal therapy
  • medication-assisted treatment (MAT)

Many treatment facilities provide treatment plans that are individualized to each patient’s needs and conditions. A comprehensive assessment is usually performed at the onset of treatment to determine the best course of action for an individual.

Gender-Specific Treatment In New York

Men and women often experience addiction and recovery differently. There are many treatment centers in New York that offer gender-specific programs in which men and women are separated. This allows individuals to form bonds within their own gender and focus on the issues in addiction and recovery that affect each gender specifically.

The Phoenix House offers gender-specific drug and alcohol addiction programs and has various locations throughout New York. Each treatment center provides a range of services that include relapse prevention, early intervention, inpatient and outpatient programs, and aftercare services. The treatment here is based on an evidence-based approach that believes addiction is a chronic disease and requires continued care to overcome.

New York Luxury Rehabilitation Centers

A luxury rehabilitation center offers many of the same forms of addiction treatment as traditional facilities but also provides luxurious amenities for patients to enjoy during their stay. For example, a luxury treatment center may have onsite fitness centers and a pool as well as places for yoga or meditation. Patients also typically have their own private room and bathroom at luxury rehab centers.

The Dunes East Hampton is a luxury rehab center that provides a healing and safe environment for individuals to overcome drug or alcohol addiction. Set on a private, estate-like property in East Hampton, The Dunes offers upscale amenities such as a swimming pool, onsite chef, and private living options. The facility provides a range of services, including inpatient and outpatient treatment and dual diagnosis programs.

Treatment For Co-Occurring Disorders

There are many rehab facilities in New York that provide treatment for dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders. Dual diagnosis is when a person suffers from both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. Rehab facilities that treat co-occurring disorders focus on healing all aspects of this condition to help a person recover mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Conifer Park in Glenville is a private inpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment center that provides specialized treatment for co-occurring disorders. Each patient is assigned a case manager as well as an interdisciplinary team of professionals who provide ongoing and individualized treatment throughout the patient’s stay. A few of the services this rehab center offers include psycho-educational classes, medication management, and regular mental and physical health consultations.

Paying For Inpatient New York Drug And Alcohol Addiction Treatment

While inpatient drug and alcohol rehab can certainly be expensive, very rarely does someone pay the cost in full out of pocket. There are various options available to help cover the expenses of a rehab center, one of the most common being private insurance. How much your insurance carrier will pay will depend largely on the type of plan you have.

Some of the most commonly accepted private insurance carriers at New York rehab facilities include:

  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Empire BlueCross BlueShield
  • Fidelis Care
  • MetroPlus Health Plan

Additionally, some New York treatment centers accept public insurance, such as Medicaid and Medicare. A number of rehab centers also offer scholarships or grants to help cover the cost of treatment.

New York Low-Cost, State-Funded, Or Free Inpatient Treatment

The New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) provides support for those who cannot afford substance abuse treatment or who do not have insurance. There are many treatment facilities throughout New York that offer services on a sliding-scale basis that is based on an individual’s income.

Hope House in Albany provides drug and alcohol addiction treatment services to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. The facility is partnered with OASAS to offer a comprehensive spectrum of services for adults, teens, and mothers. This rehab center offers residential treatment as well as outpatient services and programs specifically for women and children.

New York Outpatient Drug And Alcohol Centers

An alternative to inpatient drug and alcohol treatment is outpatient programs. During outpatient treatment, patients go to a rehabilitation clinic to receive treatment on a daily or weekly basis and return home each day. Outpatient programs can also be used to help individuals transition from inpatient care to living on their own again.

Each type of care has its benefits. Outpatient treatment allows patients to continue their daily lives while they receive treatment. Inpatient treatment for drug and alcohol abuse helps patients focus solely on their recovery, without the distractions and temptations of daily life.

Hazelden Betty Ford in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City provides drug and alcohol addiction treatment on an outpatient basis. The drug and alcohol addiction treatment center offers many different forms of outpatient treatment, including day treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and continuing care groups. Programs are centered on an abstinence-based, 12-step approach.

New York Substance Abuse Rates

More than one million people ages 12 and older living in New York have an alcohol use disorder, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). To be exact, a survey by SAMHSA showed 1,073,000 individuals in this age group in 2014 to 2015 reported an alcohol use disorder within the previous year.

That means 6.4 percent of New York adolescents and adults have a drinking problem. New York State’s annual average percent of past-year alcohol use disorder is similar to the national average, which is 6.1 percent.

Binge drinking is also a problem in New York. More than 17 percent of residents in New York State reported binge drinking on one occasion within a month in 2017, according to the United Health Foundation, up from 16.7 percent the previous year.

The good news is that the alcohol use disorders are not getting worse in New York State, as the annual average percentage in 2014 to 2015 was not significantly different from that in 2011 to 2012. However, the number of alcohol use disorders is not getting better.

Unfortunately, more people are using drugs in New York State and, consequently, more people are dying from drug overdoses. This is particularly true for opioid drugs, which is a class of painkillers that includes morphine, oxycodone (OxyContin), fentanyl, and heroin. The number of opioid overdose deaths doubled in just five years, from 5.4 deaths per 100,000 people in 2010 to 10.8 deaths per 100,000 people in 2015.

Heroin accounts for a large number of these deaths. Use of this illicit drug was more prevalent in 2014 to 2015 than it was in 2013 to 2014, with 87,000 individuals aged 12 or older using the controlled substance in the past year. Heroin users accounted for 0.52 percent of all individuals in that age group.

Fortunately, treatment can help an individual stop abusing drugs or alcohol, and researching treatment centers is the first step to finding a facility that is right for you or a loved one.
