Kentucky

Nicknamed “The Bluegrass State,” Kentucky is located in the east central part of the United States. The area joined the union of the U.S. in 1792 and now houses a population of over 4 million ranking the 26th most populated state in the country. The capital of Kentucky is Frankfort and the largest city is Louisville.

Kentucky has a rich Native American heritage and has 90,000 miles of lakes and rivers throughout it. The state does attract some tourism from other parts of the country. It was the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln as well as the area that was established by Congress way back in 1916. In addition to this Kentucky offers boating to visitors as well as horse racing tracks and a wide variety of hunting and fishing options per Kentucky.gov.

The United States Census Bureau reports that 80% of Kentucky residents are high school graduates. In addition to this the median household income is around $41,000.00 and nearly 70% of the state’s populations are homeowners per Census.gov.

The state has many natural attractions such as Mammoth Cave National Park and the Cumberland Gap.
Kentucky is attractive to many residents but the state has had its struggles concerning the current drug problem that is affecting residents throughout. Right now Kentucky is ranked in the top 10 states for the highest use of illicit drugs, prescription painkillers and drug dependence amongst citizens who are going without Kentucky substance abuse treatment.

Substance Abuse Rehabilitation & The Kentucky Drug Epidemic

The White House Drug Policy has surveyed residents in the state of Kentucky to determine the problems with drugs that the state is undergoing. Kentucky is in line with the national average of 8%, with the same number of its residents reporting illicit drug use. The percentages of people using other drugs besides marijuana were higher than the national average with nearly 4 ½% reporting the use of other drugs besides marijuana in a one month period.

The number one drug of abuse in Kentucky is prescription pain medications. It is also the drug sending the most residents into substance abuse rehabilitation programs. According to The Republic newspaper, the state just passed a bill to cut down on the abuse of these drugs. Unfortunately on that same day a pharmacy robbery took place. Kentucky also has an All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting system in place to track all controlled substances prescribed in the state. They are also participating in drug Take Back Programs to help to educate residents on how to safely dispose of unused prescriptions and advertising monitored drop off points so that these drugs are destroyed. Detox for substance abuse is vital when a person is addicted to prescription drugs. One mistake that many families make is stopping after detox. Remember, enrolling into the right substance abuse treatment center after detox increases the chances of a successful recovery.

The most abused prescriptions in Kentucky include Oxycontin, hydrocodone, oxycodone and Vicodin. Marijuana abuse is the second largest problem in the state of Kentucky. The drug sends the second highest number of residents into treatment for substance abuse in Kentucky every year.

Cocaine and stimulants are the third and fourth most commonly abused drugs in Kentucky and also sending residents to treatment. The state of Kentucky has continually struggled with the illegal production of meth through meth labs. The number of incidents of meth labs went up 138% in one year. The year 2009 saw the biggest increase in 10 years after drops in numbers in 2006 and 2007.

As a direct consequence of the drug problem in the state over 700 people passed away because of drug use in one year. Its evident the need for effective Kentucky substance abuse rehabilitation facilities.

Substance Abuse Treatment Options & Prevention Programs In Kentucky

With the ongoing struggles with substance abuse Kentucky has a number of prevention programs to reach out to those who have not yet tried drugs and to provide community information on prevention and safer communities across the state. The “Save Our Kids Coalition” is one such program and its mission is the vision of a drug free community where kids can reach their full potential.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports that Kentucky has nearly 300 substance abuse rehab programs located across the state. There are many different types of substance abuse rehab programs in Kentucky for those struggling with addiction problems including:
